The history of Freemasonry is fraught with both foggy fact and bright, shiny fiction. It's easy to see why conspiracy theorists love them, when they go about using words like "Lodge of Perfection" and "Sublime Council of the Princes of the Royal Secret", and have mysterious symbols like this plastered everywhere:

What's true? What isn't? Gosh if we know...we just think it's a lovely old building in a neat area of Portland. Doesn't hurt to have a hotel right next door, either, does it?
Turns out that Annie's maternal grandfather was a Freemason, as was her paternal great-grandfather. (Apparently, he was some kind of important super-Mason, because they gave him a fancy sword and everything.) As a way to have them with her during the wedding, Annie will be wearing her grandfather's mason ring around her neck, and if we're lucky, we might even cut the cake with that snazzy Mason's sword.
Cooool.
